AGM 2024: Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform

  • 21 Nov 2024
  • 7.30 pm - 9.00 pm

The 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform (LDER) will be held on November 21 via Zoom, starting at 7:30pm.

This year’s General Election gave us the most distorted result in history. The Labour Party has formed a Government with 63% of parliamentary seats on only 34% of the popular vote. More than half of the votes cast in this election didn’t count at all and turnout was the second lowest in the post-war era.

At the same time, we also have the most pro-PR Parliament in history, including 72 Liberal Democrat MPs.

Join us for our AGM to find out what we have been doing this year; and discuss the prospect for reform in this Parliament.

Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the meeting.

The relevant papers will all be available on our website by 14th November: https://www.lder.org/agm-2024

All are welcome at our meeting, but only paid-up members of LDER will be eligible to vote.

You can join or rejoin LDER here: https://www.lder.org/join-us

We look forward to sharing our work with you and to the next phase of the campaign.

We are delighted that, after AGM formalities, we will also host a panel discussion focused on the prospect of electoral reform in this parliament, featuring:

  • Laura Parker from Labour for a New Democracy. Laura is at the forefront of the Labour campaign for electoral reform and was instrumental in achieving Labour’s landmark 2022 conference vote in favour of PR.
  • Mark Kieran from Fair Vote UK. Fair Vote UK exists to hold power to account in the areas of democratic reform, campaigning transparency and digital regulation. They are acting as secretariat for the newly formed All Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections.
  • Sarah Lewis from the Executive Committee of Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform.

After a discussion, the panel will take your questions.

Our Executive Committee

In accordance with our constitution, all executive positions are up for re-election. If you wish to stand for the executive or want to find out more about the roles, please email us at info@lder.org.

Join our campaign

If you want to help us campaign, we would love to hear from you. There are many ways to be involved. Write to info@lder.org and we can discuss opportunities with you.

Wandsworth AGM

  • 21 Nov 2024
  • 7.30 pm - 9.00 pm
  • 276 Magdalen Rd
    London
    SW18 3NY

The Wandsworth Lib Dem 2024 AGM will provide the annual occasion for members to participate in the running of the Local Party’s affairs.

 WHAT HAPPENS?

Officers in the local party will report to the membership on how the last year has gone, and the prospects: members will ask questions: certain decisions relating to the conduct of our finances will be considered; and elections for the 2025 Executive will be held. In addition, a guest speaker will  provide a broader perspective on our Lib Dem Affairs.

THE AGENDA

The agenda is here. In summary:

  • The meeting will receive reports from the Chair, the Treasurer, our three constituencies of Battersea, Putney and Tooting, and our candidate for the 2024 London Assembly election.
  • The financial information for Agenda item 3 – the Treasurer’s report – will be posted a few days before the AGM takes place.
  • We will hold a consultation on voting procedure for contested places on the Executive
  • The returning officer will supervise the elections, subject to the need for a ballot of all our members if a position or positions on the 2025 Executive is contested.
  • To close, Lib Dem MP Olly Glover will address the meeting, with an opportunity for questions

All Members are cordially invited and encouraged to come. This is your opportunity to learn what is going on in the local party, to hear about a national Lib Dem perspective, to ask questions and to hold the Executive to account.

THE ELECTION OF THE 2025 EXECUTIVE

The Executive encourages nominations for membership of the new Executive in 2025. We would like the Executive to be as representative as possible of the local community we serve. For more information about standing for the Executive contact the Returning Officer Matthew Bryant at 49 Goodman Crescent, SW2 4NR or email matthew.bryant05@btinternet.com.  Nomination forms can be obtained from Matthew or by downloading a copy. Nominations will close at the AGM, shortly before the election procedure under agenda item 7.

Applications from women and from minorities who might be underrepresented are particularly welcome. If more than one applicant applies for a particular position, the applicants will be given an opportunity for all but one to withdraw, before the contest proceeds to a vote of all the membership. You can read the rules for the conduct of any competitive elections, also available as a Word documenthere.

ANNUAL GENERAL FISH AND CHIP MEETING

  • 8.00 pm - 10.00 pm
  • 7 Church rd
    West Ewell
    Epsom
    KT19 9QY

Let’s be honest, annual general meetings aren’t usually very exciting, but this one will be different! The business of the night will be stream-lined, with relevant information and figures being circulated beforehand. This will allow time for everybody to have a chat and, if they wish, a fish and chip supper. Please BYO liquid accompaniment.

Highlight of the night will be hearing from Helen about her first weeks in the Chamber of Horrors – sorry the House of Commons! We’ll also take the opportunity to hear experiences of this autumn’s Brighton Lib Dem conference, and to gain insights from former MP for Carshalton Tom Brake, now our President.

Attendance at the AGM, tea and coffee will of course be free of charge, but if you’d like the fish or chicken and chips, (freshly cooked by the chip shop across the road) please buy a £20 TICKET HERE. There will also be a small dessert.

If you’re NOT ordering supper, but WILL BE attending the AGM, please indicate your attendance by ORDERING A FREE TICKET
