This time last year, 70% of Lewisham residents voted to Remain. Together, we all believed that the UK would be better off in the European Union than out. One year on, and you have won re-election to the Lewisham Deptford constituency on a mandate to fight a Hard Brexit. I am writing to confirm your commitment to carry that through.
A “Hard Brexit” to most people includes leaving the Single Market. Earlier this week, a number of your colleagues in the Labour Party wrote in The Guardian that “access to the European single market is both different and inferior to membership of the single market…if we leave the single market, whatever the level of access is negotiated, working people across Britain will be worse off and revenue to the exchequer will plummet.”
The Liberal Democrats agree with this view. Leaving the Single Market will be catastrophic for our economy and will undermine our ability to make the investment in public services our country so desperately needs. Indeed, the Liberal Democrats are still of the view that we are unlikely to strike any deal that will make us better off and are therefore continuing the fight to keep the option to Remain on the table, through a second referendum.
I do not expect you to back our call for a second referendum. The Labour Party were quite clear in the election that they believe the matter to be settled. However, on the basis that you committed to fight a Hard Brexit, I fully expect you to join your colleagues and the Liberal Democrats in the fight to maintain membership of the Single Market.
The Liberal Democrats have tabled an amendment to the Queen’s Speech calling for Britain to stay the single market and customs union. Please could you confirm that you will honour your commitment to the constituents of Lewisham Deptford and support this amendment.
The Liberal Democrats have tabled an amendment to the Queen’s Speech calling for Britain to stay the single market and customs union. Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Lewisham Deptford, Bobby Dean, has written to Vicky Foxcroft MP to ask her to honour her commitment to fight a Hard Brexit and support this amendment.
