The recent Queen’s Speech included a proposal to ban letting agent fees. This is something that Lewisham Liberal Democrats and the wider party have campaigned for, including a Private Members’ Bill that was introduced by one of our peers, Olly Grender, last year.

Bobby Dean, the Lib Dems’ parliamentary spokesman in Lewisham Deptford, said:

“As a member of Generation Rent myself, I know that the letting market can be a difficult place. Confusing and costly fees only make it worse.

“That’s why the Government’s proposed ban on letting agent fees should be welcomed. The Lib Dems have been pushing for this policy for years, we collected many petition signatures in favour of the ban in Lewisham and now it is finally approaching the statute books.

“However, as the Grenfell tragedy showed, far more needs to be done to protect the rights of tenants. A public register of rogue landlords would be a start.”
