Liberal Democrat candidates in Lewisham have marked Europe Day today by calling on voters to support the Lib Dems in standing up to Theresa May’s plans for a hard, destructive Brexit.

John Russell, the Liberal Democrat’s Parliamentary Candidate for Lewisham West and Penge, said:

“Europe Day gives us an opportunity to remember that the EU was created to end centuries of war in Europe and to bring prosperity to all its members.

“Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn are happy to turn their backs on this successful alliance. The Liberal Democrats are not – and neither are the 70% of Lewisham residents who voted Remain last year.”

Bobby Dean, our candidate for Lewisham Deptford, said:

“If the Conservatives get their way, Europe Day will become an occasion when Britain looks back on what it’s lost.

“Our membership of the EU has boosted the economy, it’s created jobs, and it’s supported the public services that Lewisham relies on every day.

“A mad rush to a hard Brexit will endanger all this and more.”

Emily Frith, our candidate for Lewisham East, added:

“A hard Brexit will mean hard times for the British public. Almost every aspect of our lives will be affected, from the cost of our weekly shops to our safety on the streets.

“Theresa May’s careless plans ought to be opposed – and the Liberal Democrats, as the real opposition in this country, are the only major party doing it.”

Responding to comments made by Jeremy Corbyn that Brexit had been “settled”, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron, said:

“Corbyn voted with the Conservatives on Brexit, and now he is joining Theresa May in denying the British people a final say on the Brexit deal.

“Be in no doubt, if you are worried about Theresa May’s plans for a hard, destructive Brexit, and if you do not want to see our country ripped from the Single Market with the futures of millions of EU citizens put at risk, the Lib Dems are the only party which is fighting for you.”
