Reacting to the news that Labour has now selected a candidate to contest the election in Lewisham West & Penge after the MP stepped down, John Russell, parliamentary campaigner for the Lib Dems, commented:

“Hard Brexit was on no ballot paper and will crash our economy and trash our public services. We need a Parliament prepared to stand up for those who’ll be hit hardest by breaking all ties with our neighbours and biggest trading partners.

“The Labour party is backing Brexit by saying the PM should negotiate to leave, and say there should be no strings attached. With a candidate now selected for our area, voters need to know whether or not they will reject their party’s pro-Brexit position.

“The Lib Dems are clear voters should have a say once we know what future the PM wants us to have in Europe. I look forward to hearing the position of the candidate on this crucial issue.”

I live in Australia but have a proxy vote for Lewisham West. I want to keep the Tories out. Please tell me why I should vote for you? (Apart from sharing a surname, that is!) My heart is Lib Dem but my head, in this election, is tending towards Labour.
