Recycling victory is early Christmas present for Lewisham Residents

Cllr Fletcher welcomes Lewisham's announcement on expanding the number of items that can be recycled in the green wheely bins and boxes. This follows her long running campaign for improved doorstep recycling.

From 5 December, Tetra Paks (drinks cartons), and mixed plastics such as margarine containers, and fruit and vegetable trays can be left in recycling bins alongside paper, cardboard and glass. Local residents can also now recycle aerosols and old clothes.

Earlier this year, Cllr Julia Fletcher presented a petition to Lewisham Council from local residents calling on the Council to extend doorstep recycling to include more plastic such as food trays and drinks cartons. She also proposed a Council motion in June calling for an expansion in the number of items that can be recycled across Lewisham.

Commenting Cllr Julia Fletcher said:

"I am delighted that these changes have, at last, been introduced. For too long, Lewisham has been at the bottom of London league tables for its recycling rates and it is great that the Council has finally bowed to pressure from local residents and taken steps to improve doorstep recycling.

Hopefully, these changes will boost recycling rates across Lewisham by making it easier for local people to recycle.

The announcement that drink cartons, food containers and fruit and vegetable trays can now be recycled will no doubt be especially welcome to Lewisham families in the run up to Christmas".
