The Liberal Democrat opposition on Lewisham Council have announced Chris Maines will be their Mayoral candidate in May. Chris, who came a close second to the Labour incumbent in 2006 says, "I think people are ready for change and we are the main challengers. The local Liberal Democrat team is strong, willing and ready to beat Labour."
Cllr Chris Maines, who is former Leader of Bromley Council and the current Leader of the Opposition on Lewisham Council says, "I lead an impressive team that are determined to shake up the complacency that exists on Lewisham Council. Over the past year we have knocked on over 40,000 doors and asked residents their views on local services and priorities".
"I believe 6th May will see the end of nearly 40 years Labour rule in Lewisham and the election of a Liberal Democrat Mayor and Council." Cllr Maines said.
Chris Maines intends to work himself out of a job when he wins the Mayoral election.
"The Mayoral system gives too much power to one person but I need to win under the current rules to change it. I believe that the best way to deliver efficient and effective local services is to devolve power to local communities."
"I will pledge to freeze Council Tax for at least two years, Lewisham has the highest tax in inner London and after nearly 40 years of one party rule, there is plenty of scope to make savings."
"I want to strengthen local police teams and work to ensure there is greater involvement with young people, youth workers and the police."
"Doubling the rate of recycling within the Lewisham borough is a priority, at present the levels of recycling are appalling. We need to drive a reduction in waste and increase in recycling."
Full details of the Liberal Democrat manifesto and their 54 candidates will be announced when the election campaign starts at the end of March.
"I'm giving Labour's Mayor 90 days notice. It's time for change in Lewisham and the Liberal Democrats are the best ones to deliver it." Said Cllr Maines.
