Alex Feakes is concerned about the high level of burglaries in Forest Hill and Clock House
Forest Hill and Beckenham postcodes have been revealed as being top-20 burglary hotspots in the UK. The figures are based on analysis of insurance claims by the website moneysupermarket.com. They show how the government's failure to get to grips with the causes of property crime is ruining residents' quality of life, says Lib Dem parliamentary spokesman for Lewisham West & Penge, Cllr Alex Feakes.
"Although, until recently, the general trend in burglaries has been gently downward, Forest Hill and the Clock House area of Beckenham have been suffering disproportionately from thefts from homes," comments Alex.
"This Labour government has failed in the economic good times to invest in preventative policing and encouraging better home security, instead wastefully spending billions on ineffective crime databases and IT systems.
"Now public finances are tight, Labour's inability to get to grips with drug addiction and poverty, the underlying causes of much property crime, will cause misery to many home owners.
"The high incidence of burglary-related insurance claims in Forest Hill and Clock House is the canary in the coal mine for the problems to come."
