Duwayne will be a voice for ordinary people on the Safer Communities Board
A Liberal Democrat councillor in Lewisham has won an election to an influential crime-fighting body.
Downham councillor Duwayne Brooks, who has campaigned against serious crime involving guns and knives in the borough for a number of years, was elected to the Local Government Association's Safer Communities Board.
The Board helps to develop local government policy in various areas, such as crime and anti-social behaviour, police liaison, community safety and public protection. Cllr Brooks will lead for the Liberal Democrats on the Board, as well as serving as its Deputy Chairman.
Duwayne said, "It's a great honour for me to be elected to this position by my fellow Liberal Democrat councillors throughout the country. I have been given their trust and so therefore will do my best to ensure what is expected of me is what I deliver.
"I want to be a voice for the ordinary people who live in ordinary housing estates throughout the UK. The concerns of the community are what I intend to take to the heart of government. People like me don't usually get elected to bodies like this - so I intend to shake things up a bit in a way that will change things for the better."
