Cllr Pete Pattisson met with over 70 Tamils from Lewisham
Lewisham's Tamil community called on the government to take immediate action to end the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, at a packed meeting this weekend.
The meeting, organised by Liberal Democrat councillor Pete Pattisson, was attended by over 70 Tamils from Lewisham who expressed their deep concern about the fate of their friends and families in the conflict zone.
Simon Hughes MP, who is currently in the United States with a delegation of young Tamils to lobby the American government and the United Nations, phoned the meeting to give an update on progress and to offer his encouragement.
Cllr Pattisson said, "We often talk about the 'Tamil community' but they are also members of the British community, our community, so we call on everyone to write to the government to demand it does all it can to bring this terrible conflict to an end. We want to see an immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka, and open access to the conflict zone for the United Nations, aid agencies and the media."
On Wednesday night Cllr Pattisson proposed a motion to Lewisham Council to write to the government calling for urgent action to end the conflict. It was passed unanimously.
