New councillor Duwayne Brooks wants Lewisham Council to improve its response to bad weather
Newly elected Liberal Democrat councillor Duwayne Brooks wasted little time in challenging Lewisham Council over the clearing footpaths of snow and ice near to residential care institutions and sheltered housing.
"The Council seem quite complacent. My experience in Downham was that many elderly residents had to wait several days before they could safely leave sheltered housing," Cllr Brooks said.
Immediately after being introduced as one of the two new Liberal Democrat councillors for Downham ward, Cllr Brooks asked what priority had been given to clearing snow and ice following the bad weather in early February. The Council stated that they had given priority to gritting entrances outside care and sheltered homes.
He also asked whether in future there would be greater co-operation with the emergency services following the London-wide concern at the impact of the extreme weather in February.
In answering Cllr Brook's concerns, Cllr Susan Wise, the responsible Cabinet member, agreed lessons had been learned. Gritters from Lewisham Council had been out prior and during the heavy snowfall, but London Transport decided not to take buses out of Catford or New Cross bus garages.
Cllr Brooks referred the Council to a report just published by the GLA on the impact of the extreme weather called "Slipping Up?"
