Cllr Brian Robson has highlighted the Labour council's failure on fly-tipping
Information revealed by the Liberal Democrats shows that Lewisham Council has one of the highest rates of fly-tipping in the country.
Lewisham has the 3rd highest incidence of fly-tipping in London and is 4th highest in England. Data collated from April 2007 - March 2008 by Flycapture, the government's fly-tipping database, shows that Lewisham had a total of 53,896 incidents of rubbish dumping.
Flycapture shows that Lewisham has fourteen times the number of fly-tipping incidents of an average English Local Authority, three times the number of incidents of the average London borough, twice that of neighbouring Southwark and, astoundingly, ten-times that of neighbouring Greenwich.
Brian Robson, Liberal Democrat councillor for Lee Green, said, "Once again Lewisham is at the top of the wrong type of league table. This is just proof of what many local residents know - fly-tipping is at epidemic proportions and Labour-run Lewisham Council is rubbish at tackling it.
"Whilst the Labour Mayor continues to charge people to dispose of large items and fails to fully use the Council's powers to prevent this criminal activity our community will continue to suffer."
