The Lib Dems believe lighting Laurence House is a waste of money
Lewisham Council's decision to allow residents to comment on whether council taxpayers' money should continue to be spent on external lighting of the Laurence House office building has been warmly welcomed by Lewisham's Liberal Democrat councillors.
For over seven years, local Liberal Democrat councillors have questioned the need for such external lighting, arguing that it is expensive and bad for the environment.
Councillor Mark Morris, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said:
"Laurence House is hardly a historic or attractive building. Turning off the external lights would save some council taxpayer's money and be good the environment.
"For many years we have argued that turning off the external lights makes sense, however every time this issue has been raised Labour councillors have just ridiculed the idea.
"I am pleased that after many years of arrogance the Labour Mayor of Lewisham has at least allowed residents to be consulted on this issue."
