Lib Dem Councillor, John Russell, has handed in a petition from some 300 local residents at a full meeting of Lewisham Council. The petition calls on the council to make road safety improvements to Kirkdale between Sydenham Hill and Dartmouth Road. With three schools in the area school-children are particularly at risk. There have been a number of accidents on this road over the past two years with cars regularly speeding up and down this steep hill.
Local resident Felicity Sheehan said, "As a parent I know that there are three schools close to this road with no crossing patrols and I am seriously concerned that a child is going to get hurt. The cars drive down here like it is a race track. I am disappointed that Lewisham Council have thus far not recognised the concerns of local residents let alone tried to resolve them."
Councillor Russell added, "As a local resident I know just how dangerous this stretch of road is. I am pleased to be working with local residents on this issue. I am disappointed that Lewisham does not recognise the serious danger that this road poses to local residents. I hope now that they will implement a full traffic survey and consult with local residents about the results and potential proposals to slow the speed of traffic on this road."
