Liberal Democrat candidate, Pete Pattisson, has won the Whitefoot ward by-election held on Thursday 13th September.
The result was:
Lib Dems: 986
Labour: 901
Conservatives: 536
Others: 236
Labour's failure to capture the seat will be an unexpected blow to the sitting Labour MP, Bridget Prentice, who could lose her parliamentary seat of Lewisham East at the next general election.
The Lib Dems are the largest opposition party in Lewisham with seventeen councillors.

Pete Pattisson selected to fight Whitefoot
Lewisham's Lib Dems are hoping to add a new councillor to
their group on 13th September. That's when voters in
Whitefoot ward go to the polls in a local council
by-election. The Lib Dems are the largest opposition party on
Lewisham Council with sixteen councillors.
Former school teacher, Pete Pattisson, is
hoping to join Lib Dem councillors Dan Houghton and Cathy
Priddey who have represented Whitefoot ward since May last
year.
Pete has been campaigning on local issues such as the
Excalibur pre-fabs estate and saving Whitefoot's team of
Police Community Support Officers. He has also joined Lib
Dem councillors in campaigning to save a local blood clinic
and prevent inappropriate housing developments in the area.
The contest is likely to be a two horse race between the Lib
Dems and Labour. Voting takes place from 7am to 10pm on
Thursday, 13th September.
