Lewisham Council has come under fire after local Lib Dems obtained figures showing the Council has spent nearly £150,000 on business meetings at hotels in the last year alone.
Lib Dem Councillor Brian Robson obtained the figures, which show that Lewisham Council spent nearly £100,000 of taxpayers' cash with one exclusive conference centre alone. The Sundridge Park Hotel and Conference Centre near Bromley boasts 16 acres of landscaped grounds, a 20-metre swimming pool, a health and beauty centre, and fully-equipped gymnasium.
The Council also spent £45,000 with the three-star Bromley Court Hotel, and another £6,500 with the Clarendon Hotel in Blackheath.
The Council says the £150k was spent on conferences, forums, away days, workshops and training sessions.
Commenting, Cllr. Robson said, "This is a scandalous waste of taxpayers' cash. The Council has extensive meeting facilities at the Civic Suite in Catford. In the unlikely event those facilities prove inadequate, surely cheaper, less luxurious venues could be found within the Borough? This affair has all the hallmarks of Labour largesse."
