Commenting before the Mayor of Lewisham makes a decision about the new secondary site Cllr Mark Morris, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group said:
"Lewisham Bridge is the best location for the new secondary school. I urge the Mayor to back down from demolishing Ladywell Leisure Centre. All the evidence before him shows that there is no need to sacrifice leisure provision for three or more years to build a new secondary school.
"A new secondary school at Lewisham Bridge would be highly accessible for pupils and teachers due to its proximity to the DLR and Lewisham train station. It could be completed and open by 2010 and unlike the Ladywell site there are not serious planning permission risks. Most significantly if the Mayor opts for Lewisham Bridge he will not create a savage gap in leisure and other community facilities in the centre of Lewisham for three or more years."
