Cleanest streets in London? - We wish!
Lib Dems on Lewisham Council have challenged the Council over their claim to have the "Cleanest Streets in London". Street cleaners around the borough have to wear bright yellow jackets featuring the slogan, despite the fact that it isn't actually true.

Lib Dem Councillor, Matthew Huntbach tabled a question at the recent meeting of the full Council asking them to justify the slogan. Matthew commented, "Local people I have spoken to assume that the Council has actually won some contest judging Lewisham to have the cleanest streets in the capital."

Labour Councillors have admitted that the slogan isn't supposed to mean Lewisham has the cleanest streets in Lewisham and that it's supposed to mean Lewisham would like to have the cleanest streets in London.

Labour's Cabinet member responsible for Lewisham's Environment has refused to change the jackets saying that the slogans are purely "aspirational".

In response, Matthew Huntbach has said, "We fully support the Council's efforts to make Lewisham's streets cleaner."

"However, the slogan could have been 'Working towards the cleanest streets in Lewisham', which would have been more honest."

"It makes local people wonder whether other statements by the Council are true or just wishful thinking. A little more honesty would give people more respect for the Council and for politicians in positions of authority."

Lib Dem councillors plan to report Lewisham Council to the Local Government Ombudsmen if the Council continues to use the slogan.
